Authentic Teas Are Brewing

For the love of Tea

Thieves’ is New Zealand business founded by two women driven to run a company with big focus on a quality product, doing good at the core &  bringing the consumer innovative choices.

Our background was in travel with Impact Escapes where we had focussed on the small operators in Sri Lanka & spent many days on the tea plantations. Through this we connected with a global network of people passionate about corporate social responsibility, sustainable practices and business as a force for good in whatever corner of the world they operated.

The Cuppa

Born over a brew

Over a cup of tea we shared some ideas when we realised the answer was literally staring us in the face. Our own travel experiences had made us change our own tea drinking habits from the convenience of tea bags to the luxury and in fact common sense approach of loose leaf tea – direct from the tea garden.

Thieves' Tea

Bringing quality teas to the market

Over our many visits to Sri Lanka we have discovered some innovative, artisanal tea connoisseurs who are doing great things for the communities in which they operate and we haven’t looked back. We believe sharing a cup of tea brings people together, to celebrate, commiserate and sometimes just to chat. It made sense that we could combine our love of tea with our goal to make a positive impact. We reached out to some of our well loved tea estates in Sri Lanka and soon Thieves Tea was born, read about our favourite tea estates and their unique flavours.

Exploring the Plantations

Dilee and Niluka are two very special people that have shared many adventures with us, they are our family in Sri Lanka. They taught us the customs, the languages & and introduced us to the locals.

They took us off the beaten path, to the secret spots, the plantations, and teamed up with us on community projects.

Tea and Family

Growing up with tea

On my ‘sleepover nights’ at my grandparents house I  fondly remember our mornings when Grandpa would bring my Gran a wooden tray to bed with a pot of tea & a couple of plain biscuits to begin the day. We would sit in bed chatting, they were special moments” Alex

Growing up in England I don’t remember a time without tea, loose leaf of course from a well loved caddy. ” Sally

Why a monkey? “Oh…. that’s a whole other story.”

The Foundation

Connecting with Tea Leaf Trust

We have spent enough time in the tea plantation communities to know that they are some of the poorest in Sri Lanka. From day one, supporting the pluckers that bring us our tea has been at the core of what we do. Through our work with charities we knew we needed to dig deep to find the foundation who was aligned with our values. We found Tea Leaf Trust, founded by Tim & Yasmene and have since formed a strong relationship with them. Tea Leaf Trust was created for the impoverished young people in the tea communities. The focus is on the students mental well being & self esteem making them feel valued and allowing them to be role models in their communities. Education in English broadens their options for future employment enabling them to make choices.
